It is placed on the southern cease of the Waiuku River, which is an estuarial arm of the Manukau Harbour, and lies on the isthmus of the Awhitu Peninsula, which extends to the northeast. It is 40 kilometers southwest of Auckland town centre and 12 kilometers north of the mouth of the Waikato River. The Maori name Waiuku comes from a legend that two prominent brothers, Tamakae and Tamakou, vied for the hand of a stunning excessive-rating Waikato chieftainess. Tamakae changed into the cultivator, issuer and Tamakou the orator.
Tamakou become the first to meet her, but she requested that Tamakae be provided to her. He became operating in the kumara gardens and had to be washed within the wai and uku at the circulate that flows into the Manukau Harbour just in the back of the Waiuku Museum, earlier than he was able to meet her. Tamakae won her heart and married her. From then the region become named Waiuku. The nearby iwi and mana whenua are Te Iwi o Ngati Te Ata Waiohua.
