It become New Zealand's 5th largest city, with an annual increase of about 2%. In 2010 the council became amalgamated with different regional government into one new Auckland Council. The name "Waitakere" comes from the Waitakere River within the Waitakere Ranges and changed into applied to Waitakere County, which blanketed an awful lot of the later metropolis. Before being settled by using Europeans, the Maori iwi Te Kawerau a Maki and Ngati Whatua had already settled in the Waitakere location.
In the 1830s, European settlers began to reach, concentrating on timber milling, kauri gum digging and flax milling, with brickworks and pottery industries following later. In the 20th century, enterprise and carrier trades started out to grow, with population starting up after World War II, partly due to advanced transport hyperlinks with Auckland City, together with the Northwestern Motorway, whose first section opened in 1952. Suburbs like New Lynn, Glen Eden and Henderson grew to prominence within the following decades.
