About Chatam Sofer Memorial

A well known to locals and visitors, the Chatam Sofer memorial was named after the main Pressburg's Rabbi Moshe Schreiber, who was one of the main identities of European Judaism in the nineteenth century. Just 23 graves including the one of Chatam Sofer stayed from the old Jewish graveyard going back to the 17th century.

The burial ground was destroyed in 1943. The graves were circled by a solid shell and secured with boards for a considerable length of time. In 2000-2002 the entire site was redeveloped and the tombstones were re-established.

The modeler Martin Kvasnica outlined a striking new complex that holds fast to the strict necessities of the Halakhah and in addition to the most elevated measures of contemporary engineering. The Mausoleum was open in 2002 and fills in as a sanctuary. Visits must be reserved ahead of time.
