Antigua Guatemala,typically called simply Antigua or l. A. Antigua, is a metropolis within the primary highlands of Guatemala well-known for its nicely-preserved Spanish Baroque-motivated architecture as well as some of ruins of colonial church buildings. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It has been unique a UNESCO World Heritage web page. Antigua Guatemala serves because the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. It also serves as the departmental capital of Sacatepequez Department.
Antigua Guatemala means "Old Guatemala" and was the third capital of Guatemala. The first capital of Guatemala was founded at the website of a Kakchikel-Maya metropolis, now referred to as Iximche, on Monday, July 25, 1524—the day of Saint James and therefore named Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Goathemalan. Naturally, St. James became the patron saint of the town. The city become laid out in a rectangular pattern, with streets walking north to south and from east to west, with a valuable square.
