About Fort Charlotte
Fort Charlotte in the centre of Lerwick, Shetland, is a five sided cannons stronghold, with bastions on each corner. The first manifestation of the post was worked between 1652-53 amid the First Anglo-Dutch War. Little is known about the first structure and no hint of it has been found. The second structure was based on a similar site by Robert Mylne under the requests of Charles II toward the beginning of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1665 at an expense of 28,000. It held off a Dutch armada in 1667 which thought it was significantly more vigorously kept an eye on and gunned than it really was.
Actually, the dividers were incomplete and there were few weapons. Toward the finish of the war it was insulted when the administration chose not to station a battalion in Lerwick, and it was unmanned when the Dutch consumed it in 1673 amid the Third Anglo-Dutch War. It was reconstructed in its current shape in 1781 and named after the spouse of George III however has never observed administration amid threats from that point forward. It housed an army amid the Napoleonic Wars and was later a base for the Royal Naval Reserve. From 1837-75 it was utilized as the town prison and courthouse and later a custom house and a coastguard station.
