About Elmina
Elmina, also known as Edina by the local Fante, is a town and the capital of the komenda District on the south coast of Ghana. Preceding the landing of the Portuguese, the town was called Anomansah "ceaseless" or "inexhaustable beverage" from its situation on the landmass between the Benya tidal pond and the sea. In 1478 during the War of the Castilian Succession, a Castilian naval force of 35 caravels and a Portuguese armada faced a huge maritime conflict close Elmina for the control of the Guinea exchange gold, slaves, ivory and melegueta pepper. The war finished with a Portuguese maritime triumph, trailed by the official acknowledgment by the Catholic Monarchs of Portuguese sway over the majority of the West African domains in contest typified in the Treaty of Alcacovas,1479. This was the primary provincial war among European forces.
The town developed around São Jorge da Mina Castle, worked by the Portuguese Diogo de Azambuja in 1482 on the site of a town or town called Amankwakurom or Amankwa. It was Portugal's West African home office for exchange and abuse of African riches. By 1479, the Portuguese were shipping slaves from as far away as Benin, represented 10% of the exchange Elmina, and were utilized to clear land for tillage.
