About Abayan Festival

Abayan Festival is praised each and every July in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. This is a riverside party out of appreciation for St. Anne, Patroness of Agusan River. Featured by Baroto Races and indigenous recreations for men, ladies and youngsters, topped by a Fluvial Parade. Celebrated since the late 1880s, the Abayan is a yearly merry custom of supplication coming full circle in a fluvial parade along the Agusan River out of appreciation for the waterway benefactor Santa Ana. Abayan is authored from "abay" which intends to control. The celebration is held to recognize how individuals would request direction to cross the Agusan River securely as it filled in as the real center for exchange and human movement some time before the Spanish time frame.
