About Selcuk
Selcuk is the focal town of Selcuk locale, Izmir Province in Turkey, 2 kilometers upper east of the old city of Ephesus. Its unique Greek name, Agios Theologos, referred to John the Theologian. In the 14th century, it was the capital of the Emirate of Aydin, and visited by Ibn Battuta. He noticed, "The congregational mosque in this city is a standout amongst the most sublime mosques on the planet and unequaled in beauty”. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was known as Ayasoluk. In 1914, it was renamed Selcuk after the Seljuk Turks who previously drove attacks into the area in the 12th century.
It was a township in Kusadasi area till 1957, when it turned into a locale itself. Selcuk is a standout amongst the most visited traveler goals inside Turkey, known for its closeness to the old city of Ephesus, House of the Virgin Mary and Seljuk show-stoppers.
