Philomelion was most likely a Pergamenian establishment on the incomparable Graeco-Roman Highway from Ephesus toward the east, and to its townsmen the Smyrniotes composed the letter that portrays the affliction of Polycarp. Cicero, on his approach to Cilicia, dated a portion of his surviving correspondence there; and the place had a significant impact in the wilderness wars between the Byzantine rulers and the Sultanate of Rum. It turned into a critical Seljuk town, and late in the fourteenth century go into Ottoman hands. There Bayezit I of the Ottoman Empire is said by Ali of Yezd to have passed on after his annihilation at the Battle of Ankara.
