For exchange purposes, little seaports were set under market towns. In spite of their land nearness, Bragernes was set under Christiania and Stromso under Tonsberg. Hence, participation between the adjoining seaport towns was practically incomprehensible. In 1662, a merger was proposed to join Stromso and Bragernes to shape a market town with the name Frederiksstrom. The proposition was dismissed by Frederick III of Denmark. Bragernes got restricted market town rights in 1715, and converged with Stromso to pick up status as a solitary city on 19 June 1811.
