It is situated 35 kilometres southeast of Wanganui and forty kilometres northwest of Palmerston North. Ngati Apa are tangata whenua for the Marton area. The city of Marton is the biggest in the Rangitikei district, and commenced life as a private township in 1866, whilst keep and housing sections have been offered at auction by way of local land proprietors. At the time of the 2013 census, the city had 4,548 citizens. Marton has continually been a provider city for the fertile farming location of the Manawatu Plains.
Butter, wool, and flour had been among its agricultural merchandise. The arrival of the railway in 1878 brought about fast growth in the region, which quickly introduced industries together with engineering, sawmilling, and textile production to its financial system. For 3 years the small village was called Tutaenui, named after the move walking via its centre.
