About Acatlan
Acatlan is a town and municipality placed in the Mexican country of Hidalgo, approximately ten km northwest of the city of Tulancingo and 147 km from Mexico City. The foremost landmark is the San Miguel monastery which become built in the 16th century. It is partly in ruins but there were efforts because the 1980s to repair it. Acatlan comes from a Nahuatl word which means that “close to the reeds”. Before the appearance of the Spanish, this area was a part of an Aztec tributary province. After the Conquest, it have become part of the encomienda managed b D. Pedro de Paz, which encompassed the vicinity of what is now the municipalities of Atotonilco, Huasca de Ocampo and Acatlan.
Later in the colonial duration, it became a part of an “Indian Republic,” which means the Otomi and Mexicas here had some quantity of autonomy from Spanish rule. The metropolis’s founding is dated as 1518, but the first information wherein the town seems dates to 1564, while governor Domingo de Alvardo has a coloration map drawn. The monastery became built via the Augustinians in between 1544 and 1569 and dedicated to the Archangel Michael.
