Also called as “the Switzerland of India” by Mahatma Gandhi, this small town in Uttarakhand is situated at a height of 1890 mts above sea level and gives a breathtaking view of the snow capped Himalayan peaks. Here are a few of the must do things when visiting Kasauni-
Calm for your senses in Gandhi ashram- This small ashram got its name after Mahatma Gandhi stayed here in 1929. It is this ashram where he wrote Geeta Anashakti yog. The ashram has around 24 rooms and the whole ashrams has teachings of Gandhi embossed all over the walls. The ashram is a perfect place to get your mind and body in tune with serene surroundings.
Sip some tea in Girihas estate- This beautiful tea estate sprawling over 200 hectares is located just 5 kms away from the main city and is a must visit for everyone especially nature and tea lovers. Tea leaves from this estate are exported to countries like Australia, Germany and Korea.
Experience nature in Rudrahari caves- A must visit for everyone visiting Kausani, these caves are located in Adi Kailash region and are just 10 minute away from Kasauni and attracts both nature and adventure lovers. The way to the cave is a light trek of 3-4 kms and the trail is refreshing for the body and senses. There is a small lord Shiva temple near the caves as well.
Take a trek to Pinnath- This small town is just 5 kms away from Kasauni and is accessible through a light trek. The temple is dedicated to Bhairon and every year in October, celebrations are conducted in village. The village is ideal for someone who is looking to rejuvenate their mind and body.
Someshwar- Famous for Lord Shiva temple, Someshwar is visited by spiritual seekers. The temple was built by Raja Som Chand and is a perfect for tourists looking for peace and serenity of mind.
Bajinath temple- One of the most sacred shrine in Himachal Pradesh, this Lord Shiva temple is visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year. The temple is located in the Beas Valley at an altitude of 1125 mts. The temple also attracts tourists due to its Nagri style of architecture.
Kot bhramari temple- Also known as Bhramari devi temple, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhramari. Every year in august a fair is held in which the main deity is taken outside and celebrations are conducted. Adi Guru Shankaracharya also stayed in this temple during his Garhwal trip.
Food
Major restaurants in Kausani are confined to the hotels. These restaurants offer many cuisines like Continental, Indian, Chinese and also some of the local Kumaoni dishes as well. One can give a try to a few roadside eat outs or dhabas that serve delicious food. What you must not miss is Kausanis’ coolest bamboo and thatched roofed restaurant serving the best food along with the spectacular views of the Himalayas.
Shopping
Hill stations in India usually have a main market filled with innumerous shops and eateries mostly known as mall road. There is a wide range of products available on the mall road in Kausani as well. There are lots of small shops selling the popular hand knitted caps, shawls and Kumaoni woolen jackets. Besides woolen garments, Kausani is also known for Kumaoni jams, pickles and chutneys made of locally grown fruits, berries and spices. These items are a must buy. You may also want to check out the range of organic cosmetic and hair products. One may also choose from the different ieties of tea available from the popular Anand and Sons store. This store is right outside the tea factory and offers freshly processed tea leaves. One of their most famous teas is the Girias Uttaranchal Tea.
By Bus
The easiest way of reaching Kausani is by road. There are daily bus services to Uttarakhand from its adjoining states. The road network of Uttarakhand connects Kausani with the other main places in the state of Uttarakhand like Almora, Ranikhet and Halwani. Some private tour bus operators also run frequent bus services from New Delhi to Kausani.
By Taxi
One can easily commute within Kausani by hiring a local taxi. It is always better to have a fair idea beforehand of the excursions and the current prices in the town.
By Train
The nearest rail head from Kausani is at Kathgodam which is about 142 kms from the city. The distance between the city of Kausani and Kathgodam can be easily covered in 4 hours. This junction is well connected with other major cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. There are regular trains running on this line. One can take a ride either on a bus or a taxi from Kathgodam to the desired destination.
By Air
Nearest airport from Kausani is at Pantnagar in Nainital which is about 180 kms from Kausani. One can hire a cab or a bus to reach their destination Kausani. It is maximum a five hour long journey. The Pantnagar Airport is mostly used by private charters though.
