About Jokkmokk Winter Market
With over a history of 400 years, the Jokkmokk Winter Market has proven to be a unique and important Sami cultural event with immense opportunity for trade and business. This event brings together many different groups from around Sweden and Norway.
A major tourist attraction, the Jokkmokk Winter Market was founded in 1605. Permanent marketplaces near the Sami's winter settlements were established by the Swedish crown at the beginning of the 17th century in all the Sami Lappish territories on both sides of the Gulf of Bothnia. The Samis, or Lapps as they are better known outside Sweden, are a migrant people from the far north, whose way of life remains remarkably untouched by the modern world.
During these dates of Jokkmokk's Winter Market, all the activities and cultural events including the big marketplace take place in the centre of town. The Sami life style is well depicted and represented in this event. The menu of the event includes- dog sled rides, films, lectures, storytelling and Sami products sale. Further you can try some reindeer meat, a sample of joik; or just enjoy reindeer races and traditional Sami singing performances.
