About Maychew
Maychew, also Maichew is a town and woreda in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. It is placed at 665 km north of Addis Ababa alongside Ethiopian Highway 2 which runs to Mekelle the capital town of Tigray region with an altitude of 2479 m. According to Ethiopia’s agro-ecological putting, Maychew and its environs are classified below the Weinadega.
After his seize in 1921 by Gugsa Araya Selassie,citation needed the deposed Lij Iyasu became detained for two weeks at Maychew. Near Maychew, on March 31, 1936, the conclusive struggle of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia turned into fought. By means of more sophisticated and effective weaponry and advanced numbers, along with present day training, the Italians routed the Ethiopian forces, and 6 weeks later marched unopposed into the capital, Addis Ababa.The battle of Maychew became despairing for the emperor. During the Italian occupation, the inhabitants protected approximately 500 nearby populace and 22 Italians. Facilities covered telephone service, an infirmary, a gas station, eating place, and a Tuesday market.
