About Hiiumaa
Hiiumaa is the second biggest island in Estonia. It is in the Baltic Sea, north of the island of Saaremaa, part of the West Estonian archipelago. Its largest town is Kardla. Along with numerous smaller neighboring islands, the island makes up Hiiu County; one of the 15 counties of Estonia. The Hiiu Shoal is positioned off the northwestern shore of Hiiumaa Island. Hiiumaa is the primary island of Hiiu County, called Hiiumaa or Hiiu maakond in Estonian. The Swedish and German name of the island is Dago, Dago in Danish.
In modern-day Finnish, it's miles known as Hiidenmaa, actually Hiisi's Land. In Old Gutnish, it became Dagaiþ, from which the local North Germanic name "Dae" is derived.Archaeological evidence of the first human settlement in Hiiumaa dates to the 4th century BC. The first documented file of the island of Dageida changed into made via modern-day chroniclers in 1228, while Hiiumaa and the relaxation of Estonia were conquered through Germanic crusaders.
In 1254, Hiiumaa became divided among the Bishopric of Osel-Wiek and the Livonian department of the Teutonic Order, appearing partially on behalf of the Hanseatic League. The island became a part of Swedish Estonia from 1563 to 1721, and then it exceeded to the Russian Empire as a part of the Governorate of Estonia, although Dago's Swedish populace kept maximum of their privileges.
