About Tongala
Tongala is a town in the Goulburn Valley district of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of Campaspe neighborhood government zone, among Kyabram and Echuca, 225 kilometers north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 enumeration, Tongala had a population of 1,926. The main Post Office in the region opened on 27 April 1878. In 1882 it was renamed Kanyapella and another Tongala office opened toward the south; this was renamed Tongala East in 1908 when another Tongala office supplanted the Tongala Railway Station office in the township.
St Patrick's Catholic church was built in 1909, opening on Sunday 28 November 1909. St Patrick's Catholic grade school was opened in 1959. The Tongala water tower, structured by John Monash, was developed in 1914 with an underlying limit of 10,000 majestic gallons 45,000 l and reached out to 20,000 magnificent gallons 91,000 l in 1923. After World War I numerous squares were opened up under the 'officer pioneer' plot. One such warrior pioneer was John McEwen—later Prime Minister of Australia—who purchased a square at Tongala and wedded a neighborhood, Anne McLeod, in the town in 1921.
