About Volga
Volga is a city in Brookings Shrine, South Dakota, United States with a population of 1,768 at the 2010 evaluation. Volga was established by the Western Town Lot Company on December 27, 1879 by Col. Arthur Jacoby. It was initially named "Bandy Town" after the Bandy family, early pioneers there. Afterward, in 1880, the railroad allocated it the name "Volga", after the Volga River, in Russia.
Volga is discussed in the adolescent novel The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the section titled "Dad Goes to Volga". As indicated by the United States Census Bureau, the city has an aggregate zone of 0.91 square miles 2.36 km², all of it land.
