About Magna
Magna is a census-special place and township in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The population became 26,505 on the 2010 census, a slight increase over the 2000 parent of 22,770. Settlement of the place started out in 1851 rapidly after the Mormon pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley. Early farmers settled in 1868 at the bottom of the northern Oquirrh Mountains and called their community Pleasant Green. By 1900, there were approximately 20 families within the area.
One of the first Pleasant Green pioneers become Abraham Coon, who installed a livestock ranch and settlement known as “Coonville” in a canyon mouth at about 5400 South. The canyon is now known as Coon Canyon, and Coon Creek flowing out of it, is one of the primary Oquirrh Mountain drainages. Coon Creek flows north and west through Magna to the Great Salt Lake. The Pleasant Green Cemetery placed inside the Oquirrh foothills, at approximately 3500 South, changed into installed in 1883. In 1890, in response to a law requiring all kids to acquire unfastened public schooling, the first school was built within the community.
