Lancaster
About Lancaster
It was capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812, after which the capital was moved to Harrisburg. In 1851, the present Lancaster County Prison was worked in the city, styled after Lancaster Castle in England. The jail stays being used, and was utilized for open hangings until 1912. It supplanted a 1737 structure on an alternate site.
The main cleared street in the United States was the previous Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, which makes up some portion of the present-day U.S. Highway 30. Opened in 1795, the Turnpike associated the urban areas of Lancaster and Philadelphia, and was planned by a Scottish specialist named John Loudon McAdam. Lancaster inhabitants are known to utilize "macadam" in lieu of asphalt or black-top. This name is a reference to the clearing procedure named for McAdam.
