The principal occupants of the zone at present known as Greenwood were the Delaware Indians Lenape. In 1818, the Treaty of St. Mary's opened focal Indiana to European American settlement, and by 1823 the main lodge in northern Johnson County was raised by pilgrims John B. what's more, Isaac Smock ashore at present possessed by Greenwood Park Mall.
Greenwood was first known as "Smocktown" or "Frock's Settlement" out of appreciation for the Smock siblings, and moved toward becoming "Greenfield" in 1825. Since this conflicted with another Greenfield situated in Hancock County, the name of the settlement was changed to Greenwood. Some claim the town's name was to pay tribute to Samuel Greenwood, who platted the group in 1872.
