Silivri, the old Greek Selymbria or Selybria, owed its authentic significance to the common harbor and the situation on the real business streets. It was a province of Megara established on a precarious 56 m high slope east of the sound, yet unearthings demonstrate that it was a Thracian settlement before it was a Greek colony. According to Strabo, the city's name is a blend of the name of the fanciful organizer of the city, Selus, and the Thracian word that Strabo thought was utilized for polis, "bria". This, be that as it may, did not mean polis, and had another significance.
