About Schmitten
Schmitten is a municipality within the district of Sense within the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It is one of the municipalities with a big majority of German audio system inside the ordinarily French talking Canton of Fribourg. Schmitten is first noted in 1242 as Schmitton. In the 14th century, the call Der Schmitten became not unusual. Because the chapel of Schmitten become consecrated to Saint Otmar, for a period the city become also called Othmarswil, first stated in 1379.
The Earl of Thierstein dominated Schmitten in medieval times. In the 15th century, Schmitten came below the authority of Fribourg, in which it turned into subordinated beneath the "Old Landscape". After the breakdown of the Ancien Regime, Schmitten belonged to the District of Fribourg and after 1831 to the Germanspeaking District Freiburg, bevor it became included into the District of Singine with the brand new charter of the canton.
With regard to the church as well as political aspects, Schmitten usually belonged to the neighbouring community of Dudingen. In the church community of Dudingen, Schmitten formed two parishes, referred to as the "Wilerschrot" and "Lantenschrot". The liberal charter of the canton Fribourg of 1831 ended in forming the four bouroughs of the church network of Dudingen into unbiased groups, but this improvement was reverted already in 1832.
