After the siege of Khartoum City, now the place of Mahdi's grave has grown rapidly. However, in the Battle of Omdurman which actually happened in the village of Karari in 1898, Lord Kitchener decisively defeated the magical forces and killed Khalifa, ensuring British control over Sudan.
In September 1898, the British Army of twenty thousand well-drilled people attacked with Sudan with the latest weapons, Maxim guns and Martini-Henry rifles under the command of General Hubert Horio Kitchener. In the battle of Omdurman, the British Army faced the Sudanese defenders, which included more than 52,000 poor Aristocratic desert tribal darvas; The fight was over in a space of five hours. Sudanese defenders suffered more than 93 percent of casualties, with at least 10,000 being killed.
On the contrary, forty eight British soldiers lost less than four hundred casualties on British life. Then, General Kitchener ordered the demolition of Mahdi's tomb and in Churchill's words, "the head of Mahdi's head may be in the form of a trophy." Kitchener restored Khartoum as the capital and from 1899 to 1956, Sudan was ruled jointly by Great Britain and Egypt. Although much of the city was destroyed in this fight, the grave of Mahdi was restored and it was rebuilt.
