It is spread over 55 acres and has been an enthralling tourist site attracting visitors for years. William Graham McIvor designed it in 1897. The Ooty Government Botanical Garden offers much to nature lovers, with 600 varieties of plant species cultivated and exhibited here. 
Some of the enticing attractions here are the Cork tree, probably one of the few in India, the paperbark tree, the monkey puzzle tree, the majestic 20-million-year-old fossil tree trunk and the Toda mund or Toda hill. Flower lovers are sure to find their haven in the Conservatory, where many varieties of flowering plants are nurtured. The nursery has a series of glass houses with many exotic plants.

The Government Rose Garden was established in 1995 to honour the Centenary Flower Festival. It has about 300 varieties of tea roses, floribunda, and polyantha roses.  It is situated on Elk Hill's slopes and has a viewpoint called Nila Madam that offers a wholesome view of the entire park. The Park has natural floral carpets, ponds, around 20,000 plants, and a collection of roses. In 2006, the International Rose Society awarded it Excellence for the best rose garden in South Asia
