About Tortosa
Tortosa is the capital of the comarca of Baix Ebre, in Catalonia in Spain. Tortosa is situated at 12 meters above ocean level, by the Ebro waterway, ensured on its northern side by the mountains of the Cardo Massif, of which Buinaca, one of the most elevated pinnacles, is situated inside Tortosa's civil boundary. Before Tortosa, over the stream, rise the enormous Ports de Tortosa-Beseit mountains. The zone around Mont Caro and other high summits are regularly shrouded with snow in the winter. Tortosa is presumably indistinguishable to the antiquated Hibera, capital of Ilercavonia.
This might be the antiquated settlement the remaining parts of which have been found on the slope named Castillo de la Zuda. In Roman occasions, the town received the name Dertosa. After over 400 years of Muslim standard, the city was vanquished by the Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona in 1148, as a major aspect of the Second Crusade. Due to the crusading claim made by Pope Eugene III and his agent Nicholas Brakespear, the attack got the guide of crusaders from various nationalities, who were en route to the Holy Land. The attack of Tortosa was described by the Genovese writer and ambassador Caffaro.
