El Puerto de Santa Maria

El Puerto de Santa Maria, domestically called El Puerto, is a municipality positioned on the banks of the Guadalete River within the province of Cadiz, Andalusia. As of 2016, the metropolis has a population of c. 88,184, of which some 50,000 stay within the urban center, and the remainder inside the surrounding regions. The city of El Puerto de Santa Maria is 10 kilometres north east of Cadiz throughout the bay of Cadiz.

According to the legend informed inside the Odyssey of Homer, after the Trojan War a Greek respectable named Menestheus escaped along with his troops via the Straits of Gibraltar and reached the Guadalete River. They set up themselves right here and referred to as that port Menestheus's port or Menesthei Portus. In its neighbourhood become the oracle of Menestheus, to whom, also, the population of Gades supplied sacrifices. In 711, Arab from the North of Africa conquered southern Spain. They renamed the area Alcante or Alcanatif this means that Port of Salt, because of the antique salt industry of Phoenicians and Romans.
