Soweto
About Soweto
Soweto is a township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa, circumscribing the city's mining belt in the south. Its name is an English syllabic condensing for South Western Townships. In the past a different region, it is presently consolidated in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Suburbs of Johannesburg. George Harrison and George Walker are today credited as the men who found an outcrop of the Main Reef of gold on the homestead Langlaagte in February 1886.
The youngster town of Johannesburg was spread out on a triangular wedge of "uitvalgrond" named Randjeslaagte, arranged between the ranches Doornfontein toward the east, Braamfontein toward the west and Turffontein toward the south. Soweto turned into the biggest Black city in South Africa, however until 1976 its population could have status just as impermanent inhabitants, filling in as a workforce for Johannesburg. Changes pursued, yet revolts erupted again in 1985 and proceeded until the main multiracial decisions were held in April 1994.
