Szczecin is situated on the Oder, south of the Szczecin Lagoon and the Bay of Pomerania. The city is arranged along the southwestern shore of Dabie Lake, on the two sides of the Oder and on a few huge islands between the western and eastern branches of the waterway.
Szczecin is neighboring the town of Police and is the urban focus of the Szczecin agglomeration, a broadened metropolitan region that incorporates networks in the German conditions of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The city's written history started in the eighth century as a Slavic Pomeranian fortification, worked at the site of the Ducal palace. In the twelfth century, when Szczecin had turned out to be one of Pomerania's fundamental urban focuses, it lost its autonomy to Piast Poland, the Duchy of Saxony, the Holy Roman Empire and Denmark.
In the meantime, the House of Griffins built up themselves as neighborhood rulers and the populace was Christianized. After the Treaty of Stettin in 1630, the town went under the control of the Swedish Empire and moved toward becoming in 1648 the Capital of Swedish Pomerania until 1720, when it was gained by the Kingdom of Prussia and after that the German Empire.
