About Oegstgeest
Oegstgeest is a town and municipality within the province of South Holland in the western Netherlands. Its population was 23,810 in 2017. The component geest in the name refers to the geest lands, which have been excavated inside the seventeenth century for the benefit of the urban enlargement of Leiden. About the Oegst component more uncertainty exists. Different testimonies move about. The name became previously often spelled Oestgeest or Oostgeest, which can imply the geographical location of the village: east of the geest lands. However, the oldest spelling discovered in a duplicate of a list of products of the St. Martin's Cathedral in Utrecht from the tenth century states Osgeresgeest. This may want to suggest an authentic resident and owner of the territory: Osger.
In the Middle Ages in addition they talked about the Church of Kerckwerve if one mentioned the Oegstgeester parish church. Oegstgeest is one of the earliest inhabited places alongside the coast. Evidence of a Batavian settlement from the second century become determined in 1946 in an extension of a coastal dune within the Elgeesterpolder, although it isn't always sure whether this vicinity remained completely inhabited within the centuries after that.
