About Pelago
Pelago is an Italian town of about 7,776 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Florence in Tuscany . It belongs to the Union of Municipalities of Valdarno Valdisieve formerly Montagna Florentine Mountain Community. Pelago, due to its geographical location, was populated since prehistoric times and, in later periods, the Etruscans and then the Romans established themselves first. In the middle Ages the morphology of the land was a natural place for the development of towers, castles, villas and farmhouses. The same historical center of Pelago was built around the castle of the Conti Guidi whose presence is documented as early as 1089.
In reality the property of the castle was owned by the Cattanei, probably their vassals. Pelago was later the scene of clashes between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Rustic wool cloths have been, in the past, one of the main sources of the economy of Pelago.
