Tsomgo

Tsomgo Lake is a must-see for anyone travelling to the state of Sikkim. One of the most beautiful states in the north-east, it is dotted with picturesque lakes—Tsomgo being one of them. It is also popularly known by the name of Changu Lake.

Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake. It remains completely frozen in the winter season. The lake is situated in the lap of the Himalayan Mountains, which are covered in snow in winters. It is located at an elevation of 3,753 meters above sea-level. The name Tsomgo is derived from two words 'Tso' meaning "lake" and 'Mgo' meaning "head" which gives the literal meaning as "source of the lake", in Bhutia language. The most striking feature of the lake is that the surface changes its color according to the seasons. This is held in great reverence by local people.

At the end of the winter season, rhododendrons, irises, blue and yellow poppies bloom around the lake, adding to its beauty. There is a small temple at the bank, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tourists also enjoy yak rides.
