Solapur

Solapur is an ancient city located in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a famous pilgrimage center, due to the temple of Akkalkot Swami which sees thousands of devotees every year. Solapur is known for its rich culture and heritage. Natural beauty and history merge to form the picturesque town.

The city was also known as Solanpur in early days. It was ruled by ious ancient dynasties such as the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas and Bahamanis. Today, Solapur has been a leading center of cotton mills and power looms. Solapuri Chadars are famous not only in India, but globally. It is one of the leading producers of the South Asian Cigarettes or beedi.

The city is dotted with temples. Some of the main ones are the Akkalkot Temple, Siddeshwar Temple, Markandeya Temple, and Venkateshwara Temple. The festival of Makar Sankranti is one of the largest festivals celebrated in Solapur. It attracts scores of devotees.
