About Aligarh
The perfect combination of history, heritage and culture, Aligarh is a city in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is well-known as an important learning centre, home to the famous Aligarh Muslim University. The city is also referred to as the city of locks, owing to its flourishing lock industries.
The city has immense historical importance. Prior to the 18th century, Aligarh was known as Kol. It was here that the famous battle of Aligarh was fought in 1803 between the British and the French forces. The Aligarh Fort is an important landmark in the city. It was built during the time of Ibrahim Lodi in the 16th century and has been a witness to the historical upheavals in Aligarh. In fact, the city was named after this fort.
Some of the popular tourist attractions in the city are the Aligarh Muslim University, Maulana Azad Library, Teerthdham Mangalaayatan, Khereshwar Temple, and Jama Masjid among others.
