About Waldheim
Waldheim is a metropolis in Mittelsachsen district, in Saxony, Germany. Waldheim within the Margraviate of Meissen became first mentioned in 1198. Waldheim Castle first seemed in a 1271 deed, the encircling settlement obtained city privileges in 1286. The fortress became an Augustinian monastery in 1404. The populace turned Protestant in 1537. In 1588 Waldheim Castle changed into once more rebuilt as a searching inn by using Elector Christian I of Saxony.
In 1716 Augustus II the Strong inaugurated a detention center, almshouse and orphanage in the citadel, which is used as a prison up to today. The later creator Karl May served a sentence here from 1870 to 1874. In the Nazi generation, Waldheim jail became notorious as a detention centre for political fighters, convicted for practice of excessive treason, undermining army morale or just listening to banned Feindsender radio stations. Among the inmates were several resistance warring parties like Eva Schulze Knabe, who was convicted by using the People's Court in 1942 and freed at the stop of World War II.
