About Saint Omer
Saint-Omer is a commune in France. It is a commune and sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department sixty eight km west-northwest of Lille at the railway to Calais. The city is named after Saint Audomar, who brought Christianity to the place. The canalised portion of the river AA starts at Saint-Omer, achieving the North Sea at Grave strains in northern France. Below its walls, the AA connects with the Neuroses Canal, which ends at the River Lys.
Saint-Omer first seemed in the writings all through the 7th century beneath the name of Sithiu across the Saint-Bertin abbey based on the initiative of Automat, Odemaars or Omer, bishop of Therouanne, in the 7th century hooked up the Abbey of Saint Bertin, from which that of Notre-Dame was an offshoot. Rivalry and dissension, which lasted till the French Revolution, quickly sprang up among the 2 monasteries, turning into specially virulent whilst in 1559 St Omer became a bishopric and Notre-Dame was raised to the rank of cathedral.
