Les Sables d Olonne
About Les Sables d Olonne
Les Sables d Olonne is a seashore metropolis in Western France at the Atlantic Ocean. It is a sub prefecture of the branch of Vendee and has the administrative level of commune. On January 1, 2019, The municipalities of Olonne sur Mer, Le Chateau d Olonne and Les Sables d Olonne merged into one town named Les Sables d Olonne. Les Sables d Olonne is French for the sands of Olonne. It changed into based in 1218 from Havre d Olonne by means of Savary I de Mauleon, the Lord of Mauleon, Senechal of Poitou and prince of Talmont.
Its records are tied to the ocean for which it has served as a port and point of maritime trade. Louis XI separated Les Sables d Olonne from the city of Olonne in 1472. It became the most important cod fishing port in France, with 14,000 inhabitants, in the 17th century. During the French Revolution, unlike the surrounding Vendee, the city supported the Republic and so was regularly besieged unsuccessfully because of its port. The present day nearby tourism industry lines its roots to bathing establishments first began in 1825.
