About Oulunsalo
Oulunsalo is a former Finnish municipality in the western part of Northern Ostrobothnia, about 10 kilometers south of Oulu. At the time of the dissolution, 9,897 people lived in the Oulunsalo area, with an area of 211.22 km2, of which 0.92 km2 was watercourse. The population density was 118.73 inhabitants. Public transport lines: 8.9.9B, 58.59. The island, once known as the Owla Sala, was already a major trading venue in the 15th century. There were Russian, Karelian and Western Finnish merchants.
The popularity of the island was based on a good traffic position: the connections were good by the sea from western Finland and along the Oulujoki river basin from Karelia. In 1584 there were already 36 houses on the island. The insecurity of the area slowed down the settlement. The Swedes and Russians fought for the domination of the region until the Peace of 1595, when Northern Ostrobothnia was joined to Sweden. In the 17th century, however, Oulunsalo lost its importance as a trading venue due to the lowering of waters and the establishment of the city of Oulu.
