About Tavua
Tavua is a metropolis in Fiji, 91 kilometres from Nadi and nine kilometres from the gold mining settlement of Vatukoula. It was formally incorporated as a Town in 1992 with the appointment of its first Mayor, Iliesa Vula from Tavualevu. The city covers a land area of one hundred square kilometres, and had a populace of 2,418 at the 1996 census.
Tavua is meant to be ruled by using a nine-member Town Council, elected for a three-year time period, who go with a Mayor from among themselves for a one-yr time period, renewable indefinitely. At the most recent municipal election, held on 22 October 2005, all nine seats were won by means of the Tavua Ratepayers, Landowners, and Tenants Association. The new council reelected Chandra Singh, Mayor due to the fact 2001, for another term. In 2009, the Military-backed intervening time government dismissed all municipal governments at some point of Fiji and appointed special directors to run the city regions. As of 2015, elected municipal authorities has now not been restored. The special administrator of Tavua is Tulsi Ram. He took office in January 2015, changing Jay Whyte.
