From 1969 to 1997, the honors were overseen specifically by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. The awardees are chosen by a free jury framed by the foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Kerala. The jury for the most part comprises of prominent identities from the film field.
For the honors for writing on silver screen a different jury is framed. The institute every year welcomes films for the honor and the jury examinations the movies that are submitted before choosing the champs. The honors plans to advance movies with creative qualities and empower specialists, experts and makers. The honors are announced by the Minister for Cultural Affairs and are introduced by the Chief Minister of Kerala. The quantity of honors differs from year to year, considering the changing situation of film expressions inside and outside the province of Kerala. The most recent number of honors is more than 30; the first number of honors in 1969 was 15.
