Located in Administrative Zone three of the Afar Region, above a gorge at the Awash River, after which the metropolis is named, the town lies at the Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway, which crosses the gorge by means of a bridge there. It is the biggest agreement in Awash Fentale woreda. Awash lies outdoor the Awash National Park, which is understood for its flora and fauna, for the Mount Fentale caldera and for the Filwoha Hot Springs.
Its marketplace is hung on Mondays, wherein Afar and Kereyu crafts may be observed. An iron bridge over the Awash have been constructed at the present vicinity of Awash via Emperor Menelik II's favorite, Alfred Ilg, round 1890; this bridge replaced an in advance timber one. The construction had to face the fantastic trouble of transporting the girders from Djibouti, but once the cloth had arrived, the structure had been finished in ten days; but Emperor Menelik had used for different functions the cement imported from Europe to build the bridge with.
When Count Gleichen encountered the bridge in 1897, during his assignment to Emperor Menelik, he observed "the bridge could be too susceptible to face anything but normal %-animal traffic. For 9 months in the year it's far blocked at each quit by using a broad abattis of thorn-bush, - to prevent people from using it while the river is fordable, - however all through the rains it's miles left open."
