An iron bridge over the Awash have been constructed at the present vicinity of Awash via Emperor Menelik II's favorite, Alfred Ilg, round 1890; this bridge replaced an in advance timber one. When Count Gleichen encountered the bridge in 1897, during his assignment to Emperor Menelik, he observed "the bridge could be too susceptible to face anything but normal %-animal traffic. For 9 months in the year it's far blocked at each quit by using a broad abattis of thorn-bush, - to prevent people from using it while the river is fordable, - however all through the rains it's miles left open."
