Thunder Bay is a city in, and the seat of, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. It is the most crowded district in Northwestern Ontario with a populace of 107,909 as of the Canada 2016 Census, and the second most crowded in Northern Ontario after Greater Sudbury. Situated on Lake Superior, the statistics metropolitan territory of Thunder Bay has a populace of 121,621, and comprises of the city of Thunder Bay, the districts of Oliver Paipoonge and Neebing, the townships of Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and Gillies, and the Fort William First Nation.
European settlement in the district started in the late seventeenth century with a French hide exchanging station on the banks of the Kaministiquia River.
