About Lier
Lier, northern Belgium, situated at the intersection of the Great and Little Nete waterways, southeast of Antwerp. Likely settled in the eighth century, it created around the Chapel of St. Subside on the site of a prior wooden house of prayer.
A critical material focus by the fourteenth century, it was conceded numerous town benefits by Henry I and John I of Brabant. It was attacked and caught by the Spanish in 1582, by the Dutch in 1595, and by the English in 1706 amid the War of the Spanish Succession. Belgian patriots repulsed a Dutch assault there in 1830. In spite of the fact that the town was incompletely obliterated amid the barrage of Antwerp in 1914, some medieval structures survived.
