About Geelong
Geelong is a port metropolis placed on Corio Bay and the Barwon River, in the kingdom of Victoria, Australia. Geelong is 75 kilometres south-west of the kingdom capital, Melbourne. It is the second biggest Victorian town, with an estimated urban population of 192,393 as of June 2016. Geelong runs from the plains of Lara inside the north to the rolling hills of Waurn Ponds to the south, with Corio Bay to the east and hills to the west. Geelong is the executive centre for the City of Greater Geelong municipality, which covers urban, rural and coastal regions surrounding the town, inclusive of the Bellarine Peninsula.
Geelong City is also called the 'Gateway City' due to its valuable location to surrounding Victorian nearby centres like Ballarat inside the north west, Torquay, Great Ocean Road and Warrnambool within the southwest, Hamilton, Colac and Winchelsea to the west, and the state capital of Melbourne in the north east. Geelong become named in 1827, with the name derived from the nearby Wathaurong Aboriginal call for the location, Djillong, thought to mean "land" or "cliffs" or "tongue of land or peninsula". The location become first surveyed in 1838, three weeks after Melbourne. The put up office was open by using June 1840.
