Canberra

Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a populace of 403,468,it is Australia's biggest inland city and the eighth-biggest city generally speaking. The city is situated at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory ACT, 280 km 170 mi south-west of Sydney, and 660 km 410 mi north-east of Melbourne.

An inhabitant of Canberra is known as a "Canberran". In spite of the fact that Canberra is the capital and seat of government, numerous central government services have optional seats in state capital urban areas, as do the Governor-General and the Prime Minister.

In 1908,the site of Canberra was chosen for the area of the country's capital as a trade off between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two biggest urban communities.
