Whitman Mission National Historic Site
About Whitman Mission National Historic Site
Whitman Mission National Historic Site is a United States National Historic Site found only west of Walla, Washington, at the site of the previous Whitman Mission at Waiilatpu. On November 29, 1847, Dr. Marcus Whitman, his significant other Narcissa Whitman, and 11 others were killed by Native Americans of the Cayuse.
The site remembers the Whitmans, their part in setting up the Oregon Trail, and the difficulties experienced when two societies meet. In 1836, a little gathering of Methodist preachers went with the yearly hide trapper's band into "Oregon Country". Among the gathering, Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Hart Spalding turned into the main white ladies to traverse the continent.
Marcus Whitman and his better half Narcissa Whitman set up the Whitman Mission at Waiilatpu, close to the Walla River. The mission was in the Cayuse domain. The Cayuse were a warring clan and were suspicious of the Whitmans.
