About Torcello Island
Venice started on this external island of Torcello, established here as right on time as the seventh century, and by the twelfth century, it was a thriving business town. Of its royal residences, chapels, shipyards, and docks, just two temples and a modest bunch of houses stay, dabbed over the expansive island. You can get some thought of the significance of Torcello from its house of prayer, committed in 639 to Santa Maria Assunta. It is viewed as the best residual case of Venetian-Byzantine design. It was remade in 834 and 1008, and the porch and two parallel apses were included the ninth century; a significant part of the building dates from the eleventh century. The mosaics covering the inside are extraordinary.
