About The Spirit of Detroit

The Spirit of Detroit is a city landmark that speaks to the city of Detroit. The bronze statue was appointed for $58,000 in 1955 by Marshall Fredricks and was committed in 1958. Situated at the Coleman A. Youthful Center on Woodward Ave, the 26-foot design was the biggest thrown bronze statue since the Renaissance at the time it was assembled. In the statue's left hand it holds an overlaid bronze circle, radiating beams to symbolize God, and in its correct it holds a family gather symbolizing every human relationship. On the plaque before the statue gives the engraving: "The craftsman communicates the idea that God, through the soul of man is showed in the family, the noblest human relationship."
