About Sheldall Schoolhouse
In 1860, this school was built by newly immigrated Norwegian farmers from lumber harvested along the Skunk River.
It was built by Lars Henryson on land in southern Hamilton County owned by Lars Sheldall.
Many functions conducted by the school including a polling location during the Lincoln presidential election of 1860.
It was moved to its current location in 1990 by the Story City Historical Society. The restored building resembles the education system during from 1860 - 1885. The location of this schoolhouse is Broad St and Hillcrest Dr.
it also provided education for 241 students and employed 30 teachers. The Schoolhouse also opened for public, available at the time and was often used for public and religious events such as elections, funerals, and weddings.
This also used to host friendly competitions and events between neighboring schoolhouses. These events included musical programs, debates, and spelling bees.
