Saint Louis Science Center

The Saint Louis Science Center, established as a planetarium in 1963, is an accumulation of structures including a science historical center and planetarium in St. Louis, Missouri, on the southeastern corner of Forest Park. With more than 750 shows in a complex of more than 300,000 square feet, it is among the biggest of it’s composed in the United States. Financing for the principal structure of the present grounds started in 1955, with $1 million of a $110 million city bond issue indicated for the development of a planetarium. Two years were spent looking over areas.

The principal proposed site, on the northern side of Forest Park close to the Jefferson Memorial Building at Lindell and DeBaliviere, was rejected in light of limitations on subdivisions. The area was changed toward the southern piece of the recreation center, on the site of the old mounted police headquarters, which was annihilated in 1960. The arrangement was to manufacture a planetarium, science exhibition hall, and regular history museum.

The Planetarium was planned by Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum with a one of a kind shape Obata was later entrusted in the 1970s with outlining the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.. Compositional Forum magazine depicted it as, "Resembling some peculiar art spun practical from space. St. Louis' new planetarium roosts smoothly on an ascent in Backwoods Park".
